FMCW radar that can measure water surface disturbance

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWAVEICBOOST, IWR6843ISK-ODS

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Does any of our mmWave radars suitable for measuring water surface disturbance?

The sensor will be looking down at the water surface and any disturbance will be measured. Which of our mmWave radars are best suited for this?  If you can include the technical details like the minimum water surface disturbance that can be measured and how far should the sensor be from water surface for best results, that will be really helpful.

Or Ultrasonic Sensors are best fitted for this application?

Thanks and regards,

Art

  • Hi Art

    A few questions,

What is the distance the sensor would be from the water? Also at what angle would the sensor be facing the water?

How much disturbance should the sensor be able to measure?

Also is the water expected to be still or flowing? If flowing, how fast?

We'll need more information in order to assist you.

    Regards,

    AG

  • Hello AG,

    Good day.

With respect to your queries, please find the answers below.

    1. Distance of the sensor from water surface can be between 1.5m(approx.) and 5m. Sensor would be placed 90 deg (vertical) to water surface, when water surface is undisturbed.

    2. There are two kinds of measurements.
    a. wave heights between -0.5 to 0.5m with an accuracy better than 2 cm
    b. water surface disturbances in the range of microns.
These two kinds of measurements need two different sensors

    3. For 2(a): water waves will be there. They can be regular or irregular waves with frequencies predominantly <1Hz and upto 3Hz(max). There will be no water current though.
For 2(a) : water will be still, may be some capillary waves will be present.

    Thanks and regards,

  • Hi Art

I believe mmWave Sensors would be a good candidate for this application.

You should order both an IWR6843ISK-ODS and an MMWAVEICBOOST board (or even two sets of each). You can use the ODS Point Cloud Demo in order to evaluate and understand performance. This is evaluation software that is designed to work "out-of-the-box" but through some algorithm/development work you'll be able to meet your accuracy requirements.

  • Thanks AG.

Just like to confirm. Will the same solution works for both kinds of measurements:
    - surface waves of +/- 0.5m wave height
    - surface disturbances of microns.

    Thanks and regards,

  • Hi Art

Yes you will just need to use different RF (chirp) configuration and processing algorithm to achieve this.
