mmWave radar sensor for golf applications

Hi Team,

We have received this inquiry from our customer,

I am currently developing a radar with sports applications, but we require high accuracy and, as such, need to move towards mmwave radar solutions

However, I am wondering if I can use the automotive radar solutions in this application as well?

If not, which alternative do you recommend?

To be more specific: I would like to use this evaluation kit to build a test setup www.ti.com/.../MMWCAS-RF-EVM

The radar would be used to track a golf ball

So we need to determine several golf parameters, during the swing and launch

(not so much flight, as this won't be feasible with standard mmwave radar)

So we need a high angular resolution, a high spatial resolution and velocity resolution

That's why I would like to use a 60 GHz or 80 GHz radar (with 4GHz or more bandwidth), as the 24 GHz radars only provide 250 MHz bandwidth

Also, the ability to cascade multiple radar chips to enable very high angular resolution in a MIMO configuration seems very attractive for our application as well

But this functionality is only provided in the automotive mmwave sensors (www.ti.com/.../MMWCAS-RF-EVM)

No, you can see it more as a golf simulator tool. We determine the parameters during launch (with high accuracy) to simulate the rest of the flight.

Does our automotive mmWave sensors suitable for this application?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi,

It is difficult to say if the mmWave sensors are suitable for this application.

I think measurements would need to be performed to analyze the performance of the sensor for this type of applications.

Unfortunately, the antenna provided in the cascade kit was designed to provide better performance in azimuth. This means that it will not be well suited for your application.

I think that if you consider using a cascade solution for your application you should work with one of our third parties such as Smart Radar Systems

    Thank you
