AWR2243: AWR2243 vs AWR1843 vs AWR1642 maximum distance ?

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Our customer is mainly interested on application for the maximum possible distance. He saw that the AWR2243 provides a IF bandwidth of 20 Mhz while the AWR1843 provides the half (10 MHz) IF bandwidth.

Does this translate into the double maximum distance?
He have checked the document "object vs range" (www.ti.com/.../swra593a.pdf) but it looks that it is for the family of the 1642 with a bandwidth of 5 MHz.

He knows the problem of not having DSP and hardware accelerator included in the AWR2243 but he wanted to know if this double IF bandwidth is (approximately) translate into a double performance in the maximum distance.

Is there a new document with the performance for the new devices? Which improvement in the performance can they expect with the increase of IF bandwidth to 10 MHz and 20 MHz? They just want rough number. They know that it is not something exact and will depend on many factors.

Hi Art,

Doubling the available bandwidth on these FMCW radar effectively doubles the amount of time-delay that can be sensed in the resulting IF spectrum FFT. So if SNR can be kept high enough, this will double the effective detection range of the system. However, doubling the distance will also double link losses. Scattering and multipath will also be increased at longer range.

Yes i know about the documents, they are really helpful many thanks a lot for sharing it.

Of course double the IF will not be translate to a "direct" double distance due to losses and many other factors. But for example i see that the Tx power of the AWR2243 is higher. I just wanted to know from your experience until which level of improvement i should expect if you compare the AWR2243 vs AWR1843 vs AWR1642.

Is there a document such as the "object vs range" (www.ti.com/.../swra593a.pdf) for the different products? With this, then i will have an idea of the real performance under the same conditions for the different IF bandwidth. For example, In the document there is a test showing that a car is detected at 130 m using the 1642 ( 5 MHZ). Do you have an idea (rough numbers) about the expected meters for the AWR1843 (10 MHz) and AWR2243 (20 MHz) ? We speak about a distance of 200 m? 300m ? 400 m?

Again, i a do not want to know exact numbers i just want to know the possibilities to each of the products to decide it has really sense to go for the AWR2243 and the expected improvement from your experience.

I´ve already checked this mmWave Sensing Estimator web and it is really useful.

However, my question was first if there is a document such as the "object vs range" (https://www.ti.com/lit/an/swra593a/swra593a.pdf?ts=1629204737177&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Fsensors%252Fmmwave-radar%252Findustrial%252Fapplications%252Frobotics.html) for the different products in order to get a much more accurate numbers that this webpage. I assume that there is not such a document for the new devices.

I will take the numbers of the mmWave Sensing Estimator as rough reference.

Yes, you are correct there is not such document.

Here are some rough numbers for real application car detection

AWR1642: 80-100m

AWR1843: 150m

AWR2243: 200-250m
