IWR6843ISK: Depth sensing through fluids

Hello,

I would love to know whether the mmWave technology and this particular device would be suitable for a fish finder! I would love to buy a development kit to start testing the accuracy and max depth of this sensor. I am looking for up to 20m of depth sensing, and potentially 3D mapping the surface underneath through fluids.

What would you recommend?

Hi Philip,

mmWave does not propagate through fluids very well. However, I would encourage you to purchase a 6843 EVM and experiment with the possibility. A few inches below the surface may be possible. You will most likely have a lot of reflection from the surface of the water, and will probably have to write some layer to ignore those points.

Would you consider ultrasound waves in the 40 kHz - 1 MHz range a better solution for a fishfinder up to 10 - 20 meters? Would you recommend any scientific articles comparing mmWaves versus ultrasound ones?

I'm not aware of TI articles comparing the two technologies. I would encourage you to research and experiment on your own.
