IWR6843ISK-ODS: Question on FOV of the EVMs

Hi,

User's guide SWRU546C gives the key features of the EVMs of the IWR6843 on page 5. But I was wondering how you arrived at the values of the Azimuth and Elevation field of view (FOV), and Gain.

I have the following questions:

1. How did you arrive at the values of the FOV for the EVMs? Noting that antennas don't have FOV properties but directivity, gain and (half-power) beamwidth. I suppose that the radar system have a field of view, which may be related to antenna properties, but it is unclear how the quoted values were derived.

2. How did you arrive at the value of the Gain? As the radiation patterns in Figures 43-48 and 51-52 are extremely higher than the 5-7dB quoted in the image below.

Hello Tosin,

1) For the Field of view for the antenna are derived from the half power beam, There are terminality for 3dB beam-width and 6dB beam-width. Here for the FOV ~6dB beam-width is used.

2) Antenna gain is measured as peak reradiated power at boresight. In the user guide provides normalized Tx and Rx radiation pattern together. You could refer to TI resource explorer Antenna database for more info on this.

In summary, you mean that the FOV of the (a) radar = HPBW (half power beamwidth) of the antenna

And also, HPBW of antenna is equivalent to the FOV of the antenna.

Is this correct?

I have been trying to find these definitions in any antenna and radar textbook, but none so far.

Yes, some time it would be 3dB beamwidth or 6dB beamwidth, There are many terminology used in the industry. Here ~6dB beamwidth used for arriving field of view.
