AWR2243: Data Packet Packing Format for 16-Bit Complex Configuration

Part Number: AWR2243

Hello, experts

I saw the data packet format of AWR2243 in the document "AWR2243 Single-Chip 76- to 81-GHz FMCW Transceiver", but the data length is 12 bits.

What I want to know is, if the data length is 16 bits, what is the packet format? Whether the only change is to expand 12 bits to 16 bits, and the reset of packet format will not change, right?

Thank you

  • Hello, expert, thank you for your reply. I read the two links you gave, but I still have some confusion.

First, as mentioned in link 2, the datasheet of AWR2243 says that the resolution of ADC is 12 bits, but document "mmWave Radar Interface Control Document" says that the resolution of ADC is 16 bits.

    Why?

Link 2 only answers how to convert from 16 bits to 12 bits, and does not explain why the descriptions of the two documents are inconsistent.

Second, my question is what is the format of  the 16 bit packet? What is the difference between the 16 bit packet format and the 12 bit packet format? The two links do not directly answer this question.

I put two figures below. One describes the 12 bit format and the other is what I think is the 16 bit format.

Combining the two links, can I understand Figure 1 as follows: For the AWR2243, the output of ADC itself is 16 bits, but because the user needs 12 bits ADC output, 4 bits are discarded, resulting in the situation shown in Figure 1.

If the user needs 16 bit ADC output, there is no need to discard any bits. The output format of data will change from Figure 1 to figure 2, that is, only the data length has changed, and other output formats have not changed.

    Is my understanding right?

                figure 2

Looking forward to your reply, thank you!

  • Hello Tao,

Please find my response below :

    1. On your first question regarding the inconsistency, there is nothing of that sort. The datasheet only mentions typical values. The ADC resolution can be 12/14/16 bits.

    2.

    Yes, your understanding is correct.

Hopefully this clarifies your concerns and gets your started.
