AFE3010: Supporting 60-Hz / 50-Hz systems

Part Number: AFE3010

Hi,

I have couple questions about AFE3010.

1. In the datasheet, it says "Supports 120-V/ 60-Hz or 220-V/ 50-Hz systems." Does that mean AFE3010 could support to the range of 120V to 220V AC input and with the range of 50hz to 60hz? For example, AFE3010 does not just support 120V/60hz, it also supports 120V/50hz.

2. If we want to wire the alarm bit to the host MCU which is in the secondary side, should we add optocoupler so that alarm bit is connected to the GND of secondary side?

Thanks.

  • Hey Jack,

    1. Yes. The device can support 50 Hz at any line voltage. However, this power rating and/or resistance values for components connecting AFE3010 to line voltage need to be sized correctly when using a larger line voltage. See datasheet applications section for more details.

    2. Yes. The GND of the AFE3010 is still a high-voltage node with respect to Earth ground so any signal from AFE3010 will need to be isolated when it is connected to another PCB with a Earth ground return.

    Sincerely,

    Peter

  • Thank you for the reply, Peter.

One more question about the source voltage, may I know the tolerance of the source voltage? ±15% of 120VAC and 220VAC?

  • Hey Jack,

We ensured proper operation with ±15% tolerance, but the actual tolerance of the line voltage is region dependent and what value to test with is standard dependent.

I do know the device can still function and be reset with line voltages falling to around 58 VAC (brownout) with the typical recommended schematic in datasheet.

    Best,

    Peter
