IWR6843AOPEVM: Detection of metallic cables in clutter free environment

Hi,

I am trying to do detection of thin, long objects (metallic wires ø=1-4cm) in an environment with very little clutter using the IWR6843AOPEVM board.

I would like to detect many points along each wire as this would simplify the problem. I am currently using the out-of-box demo with a configuration from demo visualizer to maximize resolution and disable peak grouping. With this setup, however, I only get a small cluster of points around the closest point on the cable.

Do you have any suggestions to improve the number of detected points on the cables?

Hi, Nicolaj:

I have found that using single device does not provide very good performance for contour detection (due to limited angle resolution and current CFAR algorithm). You probably want to use multiple device cascade or try to move the sensor direction and then concatenate them to get the contour.

How would I go about using cascaded devices? Is there TI documentation on this approach? And can it be done with multiple EVMs?

You can find the cascade EVM board at: https://www.ti.com/tool/MMWCAS-RF-EVM

IT is a 4 chirp cascade. Using multiple EVM will not work, because you have to design the antenna across these devices.
