What formula do you use to determine the dimensions of the patch antenna on the AWR1843 BOOST?

We are looking for it in the following equation (1).
W = L = λ / (2 × SQRT (εr)) (1)
(W: antenna width, L: antenna length)
(εr: Relative permittivity of the substrate)

Next, the effective permittivity is calculated from the relative permittivity and substituted into εr in (1).

Then, the value of W is calculated until the fluctuation becomes small, and the value is minimized.

On the other hand, L is the value of W that takes one of the values from 0.85 to 0.9.
L = W × (0.85 to 0.90)

Hi Hiroyuki,

I typically refer to Antenna Theory Analysis and Design book by Constantine A. Balanis. If you go to page 791 in his book, it will have some guidelines on how to design the antenna rectangular patch size.

By the way, are the design guidelines on that page the same as the method we use?

Also, I would like to know how to design a microstrip line that connects antennas or between antennas and transmitters and receivers.

Hello Hiroyuki-san,

Yes, design principles are the same as described in the Balanis book mentioned above. Then further optimizations are done using 3D EM simulators such as Ansoft HFSS, CST tools.

For transmission line designs you could refer to the Calculators from Rogers, this calculator provides different transmission line topologies for different types of dielectric materials. https://www.globalcommhost.com/rogers/acs/techsupporthub/en/calculatorMWI.php. This would be good starting point and then one has to optimize it based on their custom PCBs.
