MMWCAS-RF-EVM: Ultra-short range surface measurements using mmwave (MIMO) FMCW radar

Part Number: MMWCAS-RF-EVM

Hi,

I am looking to perform an experiment measuring a changing surface using mmwave FMCW radar and I think this is the most appropriate product. I would like some advice to confirm this.

- We want to measure the change in a surface (approx 10cm x 10cm) at around 35cm distance from the sensor.

- Detritus is deposited on the surface causing it to 'grow' in the direction of the sensor.

- We want to estimate the volume of the detritus by measuring how close the surface is to the sensor.

- One way to do this is to take distance measurements at different points across the surface - we want to see the feasibility of doing this with mmwave radar.

- The distance measurements should be as accurate as possible - aiming for ~1mm resolution.

I want to determine what is the best sensor to do this. Making multiple point measurements requires good angular resolution. I do not want to sacrifice too much distance resolution.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Will

  • Hi Will,

So what I understand is with cross section of 10x10cm at a distance of 35cm, the range resolution of ~1mm is desired? Kindly confirm.

    Regards

  • Hi Abhed,

I would like to take multiple (as many as possible) measurements across the surface - like imaging.

The aim is to construct a map of the surface - if possible - with as high a spatial resolution as possible.

  • Hi Will, We have a high accuracy demo in the industrial toolbox – which can measure the change in height by as much as a mm. You can use a horn antenna though to achieve it.

  • Hi Abhed,

Thanks, yes I can certainly do that with a point estimate - however, I cannot use this set up to measure multiple points in order to find different heights over a surface.

To do that I need some form of beam steering - I am trying to find out if the MMWCAS-RF-EVM would be capable of doing that with sufficient angular resolution at this close distance.

    Thanks,

    Will.

  • Hello

As you have rightly noticed the level sensing example is for getting the distance of  single point based on strongest reflection.

    Approach for Resolution:

To start out based on analysis of RAW data from Sensor for the scene of interest.  Observe the distance/gradient from Heat map.

Determine distance of multiple adjacent points from the surface - Custom processing may be needed.

    Hardware to use :

xWR2243 Cascade (Two board offering)  + Studio offering for Raw data capture.

-- User would have to analyze and post process the data themselves.  First level of plots are provided in the mMWave Studio offering.

-- TI doesnt have a ready to use software example that gives the required information as output.

    Thank you,

    Vaibhav
