IWR6843ISK-ODS: FMCW radar chirps issue

Part Number: IWR6843ISK-ODS

I'm doing mmWave application research recently. We have a question about chirp signal.

Since we met ghost targets problem which generated by wall or other objects reflection, some of ghost targets we can not analyze which path generated them. The path which we can analyze is usually out of the boundary box which we had already set.

So our problem is "Is it possible that ghost target is generated by a delay chirp ?"

Normally, TX transmit a chirp and we expect RX would receive a chirp signal which is reflect by target. Is it possible that RX receive a chirp which is generated a clock ago.

Here is our description:

1. TX transmit a chirp which time index is T1 and RX receive a chirp which generate in time index = T1

2. TX transmit a chirp which time index is T2 but RX receive a chirp which generate in time index = T1.

Because T1 chirp pass some complex path and the path cause a time delay for the T1 chirp. We think this situation cause ghost target generated due to RX receive a wrong chirp.

We are not sure whether this idea is possible or correct, hope some one can help us. By the way, we used 3D_people_count_68xx_demo.bin as our demo binary file.

  • Thanks Charles

We'll need a few days to look into this but will have an update for you next week.

  • Thank you, I am looking forward to your discussion.

  • HI, Charles:

The ghost detection is usually generated by multi-path reflection between different targets (including walls or floors).  It can also generated by interference if you have other radar device close by.

But it should not be the case you described. Because it takes a long distance for the delay of one chirp to the second chirp.  For example, for a radar signal to delay to the next chirp (let us assume the chirp interval is 30us = 30e-6s), it needs to travel 30e-6 * c = 15e3 meter, which is really long, and the signal will gets really weak.  So I would say it is impossible for the radar signal to delay to the next chirp to create ghost.

    Best,
