I am trying to experiment with stacked coils using two sets of LDC_coil_EVM.

I think the total number of sensor coils and reference coils that should be input to the LDC calculation tool is '4', is that wrong?

Inquiry 2: Can you tell me how to use two sets of LDC_coil_evm stacked?

    Hello, 

    The LDC calculation spreadsheet calculates for a single inductive sensor. With the LDC0851, you only need to calculate for one of them and assume the reference will be identical. You should be using 2 for the number of layers in the spiral_inductor_designer tab. For coil H, the inductance in free space works out to be roughly 292uH. You can take that number and plug it into the LDC0851 tab for more device specific information. 

    For connecting the stacked coils, you should have something that looks like this: 

    The insulator does not have to be FR4 but should be at least as thick as the PCB to keep the reference and sensor coils separated. Your target should be on the side closes to the sense coil.
