OPT3001-Q1: Resolution questions asked

Part Number: OPT3001-Q1

Hi team

I have some questions about the opt3001q1:

How to understand the resolution of the device? Is it 23 bit or 12 bit? Since we are not expert of the device, as datasheet table 7 of datasheet page21, it seems that the resolution is only 12bit? Please help us to kindly explain it, thank you.

  • Hi Zirui,

The device has 12 bit mantissa and 4 bit exponent. The use of an exponent allows device to have high resolution at lower lux levels while also achieving a high dynamic range. For any given fixed exponent the device has 12 bits, but using auto range mode the device will automatically adjust the range setting to maximize resolution without saturating the device. This gives a total 23 bit effective dynamic range.

    Best,

    Alex
