IWR6843ISK: Question about the design using 60GHz antenna pattern (about changing the board material)

Part Number: IWR6843ISK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR6843

Hi Ti team ,

We are planning to design a new board at our company using the evaluation board as a reference.(IWR6843ISK)
I plan to use the antenna pattern of the evaluation board for the wireless part of the AWR6843.

We are thinking of changing to other materials when we manufacture substrates in Japan because RO4835 and PCL370HR are not available.
However, since the antenna part is for 60GHz signals, I am worried that the slight difference in dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent may affect the radio characteristics.

Therefore, we are considering alternatives for the substrate material.
(We are planning to copy the layout of the evaluation board for the antenna pattern of the 60GHz RF part.)

If I change the board material in Alternatives 1, 2, and 3 in the table, will it work without problems?
Please let us know if you have any advice on design or evaluation of possible problems with wireless characteristics.

Or, if you have any information about the problems you encountered when you changed the board material while referring to the evaluation board, please let me know.

  • Hello,

Your concern is very right, Layer 1 to 2 material dictates the antenna and transmission line property, If you change the material then DF/DK i.e. Dielectric constant and dissipation factors would get changed, Hence antenna / transmission line need to be re-designed with the newer material. If the new material DK/DF at the operating frequency are the same as that of existing RO4835_LOPRO material then you could consider changing the material.

On the surface treatment Electroless Ni+Au flash is not recommended for the mmWave frequency due to higher loss, immersion silver pcb finish or OSP treatment is recommended.

Other than then RF layer (Layer 1-2), You could use other materials.

If you are facing problem in getting the RO4835_LOPRO material into Japan FABs then we could connect with the Rogers representative to secure the material for your development.

    Thanks and regards,

    CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.

  • Hi CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.

I will try to find a Japanese substrate manufacturer that deals with RO4835_LOPRO substrate material.

    Thanks for your kind reply.
