the basic connection circuit shown in the DRV401 data sheet recommends to use protection diodes at differential input IN2.
Why is there no need to protect the other input IN1, too?

Hello Joachim,
The text does mention both be be protected even though the diagram only shows one side. It would be more robust if both pins add the protection but normally the voltage drop across Rshunt will not be much especially if the current is diverted thought the protection and the voltage spikes would likely happen on the side of the inductor.
