HDC3020EVM: Permanent connection problems

Part Number: HDC3020EVM

Hi,

we ordered the TI-HDC3020EVM and I try to use it as data logger for humidity and temperature inside an Inverter. I break the Sensor from board and connect them with 5 meter cables and used the online and offline software for data logging.

After some time the device disconnect without any reason it seems. Sometimes it works for 20 minutes sometimes for 1 minute and it seems the time to disconnect is reducing.

When I remove the Board from USB and connect again to the PC then it works again for some time.

Is there any possibility to check what is the problem?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Lukas,

The software disconnects when a fault occurs on the I2C bus. The faults are occurring due to your wiring. If you are using individual wires, try bundling them together or swapping in a multi-conductor cable. If you can use cable with twisted pair in it, such as ethernet/telecom wiring, pair the communication wires with a supply/gnd wire. If you have switching equipment in your lab, you could also be picking up EMI in the cable. If twisted pair is not sufficient to resolve EMI noise, the next step is to try shielded cabling. It's also possible your wiring adds excessive capacitance to the bus. This will appear as very slow rise times. If you can show us your I2C bus activity on an oscilloscope, I can comment further.

    thanks,

  • Thank you very much Ren!

I used an old Ethernet cable now with twisted wires and shielding and the device records perfectly without any problems.
