MMWCAS-DSP-EVM: Cascaded AWR2243 disconnect with mmwave studio 3 accidentally several times

Part Number: MMWCAS-DSP-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWCAS-RF-EVM, TDA2

Hi,

I got an MMWCAS-DSP-EVM (SN: 6524300175) and an MMWCAS-RF-EVM Rev. E. I was learning how to configure this device using mmwave studio 3.0.0.14.

However, during the configurations, the MMWCAS-DSP-EVM disconnect with the PC several times accidentally. I have no idea what happened.

(1) I was able to see the boot info from the serial port in Tera Term.

(2) I was able to connect the device with mmwave studio through Ethernet port.

(3) I was able to download the metaimage firmware for all four devices.

(4) However, after settings and when I was trying to collect some raw ADC data, the device disconnect with the PC accidentally by several times. I was not able to collect the data.

Any guess or suggestion on what happened?

Thank you so much!

Best,

Hang

  • Hi,

From the explanation it appears to be some connection or setup fixture issue. Would recommend to re-setup the hardware to ensure there are no loose connections or contacts.

  • Hi Abhed,

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I tried several times. However, the issue still exists.

    Here are my observations.

    (1) I have one "SKIP" and one "FAILED" on boot.

    (2) Every time I tried to setup under SensorConfig, the network connection broke accidentally.

    (3) I have flashed new SD card and the SSD was formatted. Is there anything being need to re-setup, like the TDAx2?

    (4) I am almost confident that the network cable was good. Because when I used DCA1000 to record data, there was no such issue.

Thank you very much for the help!

  • Hi,

So what I understand is as soon as you try to capture the data the TDA gets disconnected. In that case it is very likely that the power supply of the TDA board is unstable or insufficient, and as soon as you trigger the RADAR device and which then demands more current from TDA2 board, the supply dips and resets the device or makes it enter in undefined state.

Can you try with a new or better power supply to TDA board?

    Regards

  • Hi Abhed,

I didn't get a chance to trigger the capture. I broke when I did the settings.

I will try another power supply. The power supply I used was 12V 5A.

At the same time, do you know how to fix the "[FAILED] Failed to start Kernel Modules" in previous post?

Thank you very much for the help!

  • HI,

Sure. Please share your findings with new tested power supply. We can take it up from there.

    Regards

  • Hi Abhed,

Thanks for the suggestion! After changing the power supply, the "[FAILED] Failed to start Kernel Modules" still showed up, but it didn't broke the connection accidentally.

However, I was not able to trigger the frame successfully. After I clicked "TDAxx ARM", it always gave me an error "Frame Periodicity Response from Capture Card timed out". I tried serval times.

Do you know where I could set it wrong?

    Thank you very much!

  • HI,

Good to see some improvement observed.

From the log and snapshot of mmWave it appears that the procedure followed to setup the EVM needs a  relook. Can you please refer the steps in the mmWave cascade user guide and try to follow the steps very carefully, please note any miss or slip in order of steps may lead to such observed issues.

Few things to particularly take care are the configuring and order of triggering the peripheral devices and primary device(master).

    Regards

  • Hi Abhed,

I was still able to make it work by using mmwave studio GUI. However, it worked with the LUA scripts. I will take a deep look of the LUA script.

I have one more thing to ask. If I want to use MIMO or TX Beamforming, I have to do the antenna calibration once, right? Any default given calibration matrix?

    Thank you very much!

  • Hi,

That confirms that the setup is all OK now.

Yes. Please refer the user guide of TI Design(https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDEP-01012) for more details on antenna architecture.

For Antenna calibration please refer to the mmWave Cascade User guide section 8.3.2.2, this also points you to an example calibration matrix.
