IWR6843ISK: Does height of antenna board placed affect the range?

Part Number: IWR6843ISK

Hello everyone,

I am using people counting demo and long-range people detection demo. Does the height at which the antenna is placed, affect the range in both cases?

Thanks and regards,

Aleena N A

  • Hello Aleena,

The height won't directly affect the range. However, the combination of the height and tilt angle may make it so there is no or  limited FOV coverage after some range. You will need to set the height high enough so obscured targets are not fully hidden behind close targets, but not so high that the tilt angle makes it so that near or far targets are not in the FOV. Typically 203m works well, but may need to change depending on the application.

  • Hello Jackson,

Did you say the height as 203m or 20.3m?

In our application, we have to fix it at a height of ~10m and we will be using the long-range configuration to obtain a range of ~50m.

Is there will be any change in detection apart from the normal setting ??

    Thanks and regards,

    Aleena N A

  • Hi,

Sorry, that was supposed to be 2 or 3 meters, not 203m. But, in your case you already have a fixed height. I don't think that height should limit the range, but it will limit your close range detection because you will need to point the radar toward the far field. Just make sure you look at the geometry of the elevation FOV to understand where to expect detections, and modify the CFG file to match your setup. Otherwise I would expect no real change.
