AWR2243: What's the consideration to use the Wilkinson divider？

Hi team,

In AWR2243 4x cascade radar HW design, we are using 2 2-way Wilkinson divider to got the 4 20G LO.

But the Wilkinson divider request the 100Ohms resistance, so it must to make the LO trace goes up to TOP layer again through the vias.

Question, customer is asking how to use other types power divider without the resistance, then they can keep the power divider circuit in L3, then it will be less loss in the via structure.

So, their purpose is the LO trace from SYNCOUT BGA pin then goes to L3 directly, power divider is happen in L3, then goes up to TOP layer again and feed to SYNCIN.

Can you please let me know what's the reason to use the Wilkinson divider here? And what's the details spec requirements on this power divider like the insert loss, S11,S12,S23...

HI Ishita,

I didnot get the answer from these threads, can you please let me know what's the reason to use the Wilkinson divider here? And what's the details spec requirements on this power divider like the insert loss, S11,S12,S23...

And if not using the Wilkinson divider, PCB board will have a advantage in the vias manufacture, why not use this kind of design?

Hello Wesley,

The wilkinson divider provides better isolation between the ports. So if there is a reflection from one of the ports due to impedance mismatch, the reflected signal can show up on the other port if the isolation is poor. If the impedance is very well matched then this might be less important.

HI Vivek,

Do we have the recommendation value of the isolation value in cascade use case?

If there is no require on the isolation, then we can use the power divider without the 100Ohms resistance, then this power divider can be keep in the L3. The loss in via will be less.

But due to no 100Ohms here, the isolation of the power divider will be ~ -6dB. Wants to know if this workable?

Hello Wesley ,

The isolation requirement would come from customers system budget of how much spurious LO level they can tolerate . The reflected back LO from the other path will come as spurious LO on the primary path. So we cannot put a spec on it. And it also depends on the impedance matching they achieve on their board.
