AWR1843AOPEVM: Chirp configuration from IWR1843BOOST EVM to AWR1843AOPEVM

Part Number: AWR1843AOPEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1843BOOST, AWR1642BOOST, IWR1843BOOST, AWR1843AOP, IWR1843, AWR1843

Hi Team,

I understand from the other thread that the demo for AWR1642BOOST EVM can be ported to AWR1843BOOST EVM. Our customer would like to confirm if they could directly use the chirp configuration file mentioned in "Traffic monitoring" demo of "Industrial toolbox" in AWR1843AOPEVM. According to our customer,

We would like to know whether we can use the chirp config file mentioned for IWR1843BOOST EVM directly in AWR1843AOPEVM. Will there be any performance impact or deviation from expected response, if we use the chirp config file for IWR1843BOOST EVM directly in AWR1843AOPEVM.

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

While most of the configs remain the same, there will be subtle differences as the configs are dependent on the lab used.

What lab will you be running on the AWR1843AOP EVM?

Running the traffic monitoring demo as is might be an issue as the AOP and non AOP variants have different antenna patterns, which could cause the lab to not work as expected.

I am also not sure if the binaries between IWR1843 and AWR1843AOP will be compatible as is. They should, but I haven't tested this.

    Regards,

    Aayush

  • Hi Aayush,

Thank you for your response. According to our customer,

We tried running the "Traffic monitoring demo" for IWR1843BOOST EVM in AWR1843AOP. But target detections seems not working. We could see some point cloud only. We thought that if we give proper chirp configuration file, we could get proper response.

Could you please let us know what all modifications to be done in "Traffic monitoring demo" for IWR1843BOOST EVM to run it in AWR1843AOPEVM to account for the differences in antenna pattern.

    Regards,

    Danilo

  • Hi,

Here is the traffic monitoring TI design associated to this application  https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDEP-0090

What is the reason for trying to run this demo on AWR1843AOPEVM?

The main antenna difference between the two boards is that the BOOST antennae has better performance in azimuth angular resolution which is preferable for traffic monitoring applications. The AOP antennae has better performance than BOOST in elevation which is better suited for applications that require better angular resolution in elevation.

Porting the traffic monitoring demo to AWR1843AOP will require significant work to update the angle estimation.

First step is to understand in IWR1843BOOST code how the angle estimation is performed.

Second step is to understand how to replace this angle estimation with 2D Angle Estimation module provided in mmWave SDK 3.5

    Thank you

    Cesar

  • Hi Cesar,

Here is the feedback from our customer,

    >> What is the reason for trying to run this demo on AWR1843AOPEVM?
ans: We already have AWR1843AOPEVM and seems it is more compact compared to IWR1843BOOST EVM

?? Could you please let us know what is the difference between AWR1843BOOST EVM and IWR1843BOOST EVM. Does both have same antenna configuration and performance. Can we run the code for AWR1843BOOST EVM in IWR1843BOOST EVM and vice versa with same performance and response.

The structure of the antenna is an important part of the overall performance of the system.

I definitely recommend that customer runs this application on an xWR1843BOOST EVM.

The only difference between AWR1843BOOST and IWR1843BOOST EVMs is the difference between the AWR1843 and IWR1843 silicon. There is no difference in the EVM and antenna.

The difference between AWR1843 and IWR1843 silicon is that the AWR1843 is ASIL B (Automotive Safety Qualified) This information is provided in respective datasheets

    thank you
