OPT3101: how to estimate the maximum distance of measurement?

Deer experts,

Now we're considering about OPT3101 based ToF system. Our target distance is about

10~15m. my questions are bellow.

1) In terms of selecting emitter device and photodiode, what should we consider to achieve our target distance?

or what specifications of emitter device and photodiode should we focus on?

2) How can we estimate the maximum distance of measurement after selected emitter device and photodiode?
(I mean, how can we know the maximum distance in designing step, before operating the system?)

Thank you for your comment. I've read the most of documents that you mentioned.

My top issue is how to achieve the target distance of the system we're considering now, and

how to secure the measurable distance distance in the system design stage.

I think OPT3101 estimator is one of solutions, but any other way?
I think I need knowledge of optics more.

If you have any idea or advice, it will help me.

Hi,

There are many factors that will determine the distance: emitter and photodiode properties including FoV, responsivity, wavelength, etc, as well as device settings: current, sample rate, averaging, etc. as well as target properties: size, reflectivity, etc.

This is why we created the system estimator to allow interface for inputting all these parameters in to get estimation. You may also want to start with our EVM and reference design to get an idea of performance and place to start.

By the way, are there any VCSEL devices available for OPT3101 estimator?

Hi Hattori,

You can use VCSEL in estimator. It is not there by default but you can add a new emitter to the tool.
