IWR6843: SYNC_IN/SYNC_OUT

Part Number: IWR6843
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR2243

Hello all,

Please, correct me if I am wrong about any of the following statements. I know the IWR6843 is not meant to work for coherent processing, due to the lack of RF LO signal input/output. But, as far as I have seen in the IWR6843 schematics, it is possible to digitally synchronized 2 modules, at least, due to the presence of the SYNC_IN/SYNC_OUT and CLKP/CLKM. Does these mean that I can hardware-trigger couple of modules (same route length) and have all the components fed (ADC, PLL and so on) synchronized?

And, in case of true, should I use the SYNC_OUT from 1 module as an input to the same module 1 SYNC_IN and module 2 SYNC_IN (software-triggered) or should I use external triggers directly to both modules SYNC_In pins? I have read that there might be some time constraints to implement when using directly fed hardware trigger, so it might be smart to use software trigger but loop-route the signal back and forth to the modules.

Thank you and best regards,

Gorka

  • Hi,

Could you provide a bit more info on what you are trying to accomplish? To be clear, are you trying to synchronize multiple radar devices to measure the same area?

  • Hello Alec,

I want to observe if it is possible to use multiple TI 60GHz radars, employing central digital synchronization (low/negligible inter-chip time delay), yes. The only available cascaded radar, as far as I know, is at 78GHz; which does not meet the freq requirements I have. Also, I read in the AWR2243 Cascaded Doc that there are components inside the IC (Frame Counter, high speed sync and clock gator) that might not exist in the IWR6843 (unfortunately, I can not access this latter IC), preventing us to sync properly all the digital data steps.

Final aim is at checking if there is actually a way to sync radars without shared RF LO; only if we can produce the dig sync mention (to ease the overall system from time delays, and focusing on frequency and phase offsets).

    Thank you and best regards,

    Gorka

  • Gorka,

Thanks for the clarification. Please allow me some time to look into this for you.
