OPT3101EVM: Persistent strong phase offset despite running SDK first time bringup

Hi,

I am using the SDK with the first time bring up procedure.

Despite using the cache and set distance phase offset measurements, a strong off set appears due to the switching of the illumination DAC to high/low value.

I am running the first time bringup with receiving diode cover, then 10mm and 20mm phase offset calibration.
Depending on the situations, I am getting around 300 up to 14000 unit phase offsets when the ADC switches currents.
If you see a mistake in my mode of operation I would be very grateful to get feedback from you,

    Can you also share the data collected after calibration performed where you see the shift? Distance, phase, amplitude, temp, etc will be helpful to see

    Are you using the SDK with the MSP430 launchpad calibration tool mode or running on your own MCU? Are you using custom PCB you have designed?

    Also can you share background on your application/use-case for my background?

    You will see attached the data I got:

    I was  measuring steps of 20mm from 10mm to 450mm.

     

    I am using the SDK with my own MCU.

    The application is meant for medium distance ranging of the size of a thumb.

    It is still tough to tell what is happening. Can you share the raw data files (should have phase, distance, temp, amplitude, as well as HDR setting of device). Also what are you doing in this test? Can you give picture and description of steps in the test setup and data collection?

    Here is a data sample:

    As you will see when i move away the targetted object (a thumb sized bloc) the amplitude diminishes to the threshold level where the hdr starts to use a higher illumination current, this brings the a bit amplitude higher as the emitter goes stronger.


    My problem is that in my opinion, something is missing in my firmware to enable the phase offset compensation, and leaves a strong phase offset in the result.

  • Hi Thomas,

    Do you have a picture of your setup with the target you are calibrating with? It might be good to start with a larger target to calibrate to see if field of view of the emitter is affecting the calibration. Could you also send me data above including the HDR mode values? Also, you have negative values in the "mm" column of your data. Which column is the actual distance and which is the device measured distance?

    What is the actual distance in the test? I would need to see the reference distance to compare with the measurements.

    Also can you use the method described here in step 4?

    Can you also readout the phase offset register and let me know the result?

    Sorry, I realize the previous data are difficult to interpret as the offset is taking all the space.

    I gave you extra data here:

    You will notice the offset is milder here, I think it is because I reduced the DAC current. (176mA->40mA)

    For the test, I moved the target from 20mm to 300-350mm from the sensor, by coming back and forth.

    You will see that the distance is rising then falling in the blue chart.

    In red, the amplitude also rise and falls accordingly with the proximity of the target (my hand in this scenario) it triggers or deactivate the HDR, which causes the sharp changes in amplitude.

    You will also notice that instead of having a perfect triangular profile for the distance, a strong non-linearity occurs on the HDR switching. 

     

    I tried reading the phase offset correction registers as you suggested: here are the results:

    --> phase offset TX0 HDR0=14958 phase offset TX0 HDR1=11927  

    it matches with the result given by the first time bring up routine.

    I would be interested if you could confirm wether my results are normal for a EVM board,

    The residual cross talk is around 2-3 maximum.

    This behavior is not expected with the EVM but it is hard for us to say what the cause is. I mentioned earlier using a larger target for the phase offset calibration and testing. This will help rule out the field-of-view being an issue. It would also be worth checking the EVM with its base calibration and GUI to confirm this issue is from your calibration.

    Thanks a lot for the technical support and your time .

    I could not find exactly why my implementation was not giving the expected result with the phase offset calibration but but using a larger target gave me the proper values for my setup. I will check with the base values from the GUI to double check, thanks for the suggestion,

    I can use the sensor to the range I expected so I consider the issue solved, thanks to your help.
