BOOSTXL-TUSS4470: Precision for tof in the GUI

Part Number: BOOSTXL-TUSS4470
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSS4470

Hi,

I have just started using the TUSS4470 for tof measurement. I am measuring the thickness of steel.

Please is there any way of increasing the precision of the tof value generated?

Also the datasheet says that I can run the loop infinitely but the present GUI doesn't allow me to enter 0, it defaults to 1.

Thank you very much.

  • Hello Felix,

Thank you for posting to the PS forum! We will review your question and provide a response tomorrow.

  • Hello Felix,

Unfortunately I do not have too much experience measuring the thickness of steel, but one of the common issues is coupling the transducer appropriately to the metal surface. This helps the ultrasonic energy travel appropriately to the metal in order to reduce the loss of energy. Since the acoustic impedance between air and metal is quite large the metal tends to reflect a lot of the energy back and only a small portion will get absorbed through the medium.

If you are able to couple the transducer appropriately and reduce the air gap between the transducer and metal object then this should maximize the amount of energy that travels through the metal in order to achieve a good receive signal.

As far as the infinite loop on the GUI, it does not have the infinite loop option from what I can tell but you can go up to 1000 on the loop counts.

    Best,

    Isaac
