IWR1642BOOST: Questions about measuring liquid level with mmwave radar board

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1642

Hello,I am using the IWR1642 mmWave radar board for level measurement. First, I measure the ground with the radar board and get the distance from the radar board to the ground. Then, I measured the level of water in the bucket on the ground with the radar board and found the distance from the radar board to the liquid surface. However, the measured results are quite different from the actual ones. So I guess it's because the radar can't pick the liquid surface as a target. So I would like to inquire about the reason for this situation.

  • Hi Jiahao,

For the level sensing application, please use the High Accuracy Level Sensing lab found in the mmWave Industrial Toolbox.  This lab configures the radar for millimeter-grade accuracy, and will be better suited for your application.

Follow the user guide for the 16xx/68xx version of the lab.  If you run into any troubles, please let me know in this thread.

    Regards,

    Brennan

  • Hi Brennan,

I have used the method you mentioned before, but I still can't measure the liquid level, only the distance between the board and the ground or the distance from the person. So I want to know how can I get the radar to select the measurement target for the liquid level

  • Jiahao,

Do you have a picture or diagram of your setup? This will help me to give you a more detailed answer.

    Brennan

  • Brennan,

The file is the configuration and experiment scheme of my radar board.(In Figure 2, the left is the radar measurement result, and the right is the actual liquid level.)

There are two problems in the measurement process. First, when the distance between the board and the liquid level is relatively close (12 cm), the distance displayed by the High Accuracy Visualizer reaches more than two meters. Second, the actual liquid level drops from 15.5 cm to 7 cm, but the liquid level detected by the radar dropped from 2.19m to 2.23m. I hope you can help me. Thank you very much.

  • Jiahao,

Your setup looks fine.  Can you confirm for me that you are using the 16xx version of the High Accuracy Visualizer?  It should be version 1.2.0:

In addition, are you using the high_accuracy_demo_16xx.cfg radar configuration?

  • Brennan,
I have checked the problems you mentioned, and they are not the problem.
I have the following main questions:
    1. When we measure the distance at a short distance (between zero and fifty centimeters), why the measured distance is more than two meters. But the distance measured at a long distance (more than one meter) is normal.
    2. How can we extract the distance data files from the High Accuracy Visualizer.
I really hope you can help me with my questions. I'm looking forward to your answer.

  • Jiahao,

There is one more dependency I need you to check.  Do you have SDK 2.1.0.4 downloaded?  This is the SDK version the IWR1642 runs the Level Sensing demo from.  Per the lab page on the Industrial Toolbox:

Please install SDK 2.1.0.4 if you do not have it downloaded.

    2.  Once you have the demo working, you can capture data using the visualizer by clicking "Record Start."

Once done recording, click "Record Stop."  The visualizer will export a .csv file containing the range data captured by the mmWave device.

    Regards,

    Brennan
