FDC1004-Q1: Detecting Rain with the sensor

Part Number: FDC1004-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: FDC1004

Hi,

I am interested in sensing the rain with FDC1004 sensor, in the datasheet it is mentioned it is possible to detect the rain.

I could not find any application note for rain measurement.

Can you please provide any application note to sense the rain.

My device is an outdoor device mounted high voltage overhead line and I need to sense rain in my device for one of the application.

BR,

Rahul Wagh

  • Rahul,

I am sorry to say we do not have an app note dedicated to rain detection.
We do have page that references most - if not all - of the app notes we do have.
You can see that page here.

    Regards,
    John

  • Hi John,

I would like to sense rain as below

Option 1: By keeping electrode outside of the mechanical housing or mounted from outside on the wall of the housing, may 1 or 2 electrode could be enough.

Option 2: By keeping the electrode inside may be 1\2 inside the housing, in this way i can protect the IP67 of my device, in this way also i assume that

capacitance will change even the electrode is inside the housing.

do you think it should be good option to sense the rain.

I think of some metallic electrode can be used

  • Rahul,
Most of our application notes address level detection of a fluid in a tank.
It might be possible to detect falling rain, or drops from rain that has fallen, that would most likely have to be confirmed by experiment.

    John
