IWR1443BOOST: Not receiving UART signals in mmwave demo

Howdy,

I am currently using the IWR1443boost flashed with the out of box demo for a project. I can run the demo succesfully over using the mmWave Demo Visualizer and can view and record the raw data in my computer terminal but when I disconnect the radar from my computer it stop outputting data. I believe this is because the computer is hosting the radar and when the host is removed it won't continue sending data. I would like to resolve this issue by setting up UART communication between the radar and the MSP432 which I am using for my project. I have searched through the mmwave demo visualizer source code and it looks like UART communication is already established but I cannot find UART outputs in any of the headers. Is it possible to set up UART communication from the IWR1443 and if so is there a project that I look over to learn how to do this.

Hi Daniel,

You certainly can make connections between the IWR1443 and MSP432 to output UART data to the MSP432.

Please see table 2 in the IWR1443BOOST user guide. There you can find a description of the pin definitions for the 20-pin BoosterPack connectors on the back of the EVM.

In your case, you will want to connect pin J5.5 (UART TX), and pin J5.7 (UART RX) to the MSP432.

We also have a Reference Design that explains serial communication between IWR1443 and MSP432 for a power optimized level sensing application. While this may not be specific to your use case, the design guide may be helpful.

Hi Brennan,

Pins J5.5 and J5.7 are for RS232 RX and TX correct? Isn't this different than UART?

Daniel,

J5.5 and J5.7 output the RX and TX UART data. You should connect those pins to the MSP432.
