AWR1843BOOST: Lab7: MRR

Part Number: AWR1843BOOST

Hi team,

My customer need assistance.

"We are trying to study the working of AWR1843BOOST kit using the labs provided in the Automotive toolbox. In doing so, we worked on "Lab7: MRR" which stated that, the lab would be helpful to visualize the use of USRR and SRR functions of the RADAR. We understood that the USRR covers wide beam with short range and the SRR covers narrow beam with wide range as shown in the below figure.

When we tried in real time, we could not find any significant difference between both these functions. We could observe that both the SRR and USRR functions of the AWR1843BOOST radar covers more or less the same beamwidth.

The application in which we are trying to use the AWR1843BOOST kit, needs the beam to be narrow with long range as shown in above figure (TX_BF mode).

So, I need you to clarify us, whether that our understandings regarding the USRR and SRR are correct? If yes, then why are we not getting desired results in real-time ?(with narrow beam) If no, is there is any other possibility to reduce the beamwidth of the physical antenna/ digital FOV beam?"

Expecting your reply at the earliest.

  • HI,

The picture you have shared is not 100% correct for the USRR/SRR demo. Sorry for the confusion.

The beamwidth is not different for SRR and USRR

The difference between USRR and SRR modes is as follows

    • USRR mode:
      • MIMO (One Tx enabled at one time), higher angular resolution
      • Shorter range
      • Azimuth, Elevation information available
      • MRR mode:
        • All Tx enabled at the same time, lower angular resolution
        • Longer range
        • Azimuth information available

      Thank you
      Cesar

    • Hi Cesar,

Thanks for the assistance. I would also like you to ask the following questions on my behalf in the same thread for further clarifications.

"1) How can one achieve the SNR TX_BF form (narrow beam), as mentioned in the image I have attached?

      2) Also, what is the difference between Medium Range Radar and Short-Range Radar? Because it is very confusing as the documents of lab 7 (page 2, 4 of MRR developer guide) use terms MRR and USRR only whereas the GUI has options for SRR and USRR."

      Please help. Thanks.

    • Hi,

      1) narrow beam can be achieved with a custom narrow beam antenna. This would require a new antenna.

      2) In the GUI is the same as Short Range Radar has same meaning as Medium Range Radar . The MRR lab was ported from the SRR lab. That's why in the GUI we still see the SRR terminology.

      Thank you

      Cesar
