Hi Team,

We would like to ask your help regarding our customer's inquiry below,

I've purchased an FMCW radar eval kit from TI (AWR1843) and the calculator provided by TI and realized that the onboard IC memory is too small to achieve the resolution I need for my application. Does TI sell a board or eval kit to expand the onboard available memory for this eval kit? Here is the TI link to the sensing calculator: https://www.ti.com/mmWaveSensingEstimator

I was also looking to purchase the DCA1000EVM (currently sold out) but wanted to know if this board could be used to ease the 1.75MB radar cube (memory requirement)

Hi,

On the AWR1843 the max size of the radar cube is 1MB.

Unfortunately this can not be extended.

Please share with us the resolution requirements for your use case. We will check if there is any optimization possible

Hi Cesar,

Here is the feedback of our customer.

Thanks for reaching out! Our application requires a 0.02km/hr velocity resolution with a max velocity of 0.2km/hr. When I attempt to spec any parameters for the AW1843 using the mmWave sensing estimator, I get two errors saying that the active frame time and radar cube size is larger than the IC can support.

Do let me know if there are any optimizations I can do on my end, or if you have any other 77GHz radar eval kits that can support this velocity resolution.

As per our customer, 1-2m would be a sufficient operating range.

Based on the formulae to compute max velocity and velocity resolution

For Max Velocity = 0.2 km/h, the ETC = 17.7ms (Effective Chirp Time)

For Velocity Resolution = 0.02km/hr, the Active Time = 350ms (this is for Entire Frame)

So, we will need to have about 20 chirps in the frame (350/17.7)

Based on max Range we need to decide how many Samples per chirp are required.

I have a final answer sooner than expected.

Our device can not support such low velocities because the maximum Chirp Idle time is 5 ms
