Body Temperature Sensor

which temperature sensor to use for body temperature detection?

  • Hello Vikas,

TI's line of silicon based temperature sensors (ex: TMP112, TMP275, TMP75) are not the best choice for body temperature measurements because they mostly measure the temperature of the PCB they are installed on.  This would mean that you would have to wait for the PCB to heat up to human body temperature through direct contact before the measurement would be accurate.  Due to the low coefficient of thermal conductivity of PCB materials, this would not occur very quickly.

Therefore, another option would be to use a "Stick-On" RTD that has an adhesive connected to the RTD which could be connected to a human body.  Here is an example of this type of device:  http://www.omega.com/ppt/pptsc.asp?ref=SA1-RTD&Nav=temc06

The ADS1247 or ADS1248 could be used to condition and measure the RTD resistance which can be correlated back to temperature.  Information on using the ADS124X devices to measure temperature can be found in the application note: http://focus.ti.com/lit/an/sbaa180/sbaa180.pdf
