DCA1000EVM: IWR6843ISK

Part Number: DCA1000EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843

We use DCA1000EVM and IWR6843 to capture raw data. Why the system will stop capturing data after 4 to 5 hours. We should run the system to capture the raw data continuously. How to solve this problem?

We found that we should restart the system after a few hours. But when we power off and power on the system, the system can not be restarted properly for some time. For this case, we should remove the Ethernet cable, and all the USB cables to restart the system.  We found that the IWR6843 is powered with the USB cable; can we use the external power supply to the IWR6843 instead of USB to solve the power off/on restart problem? For our system, it is not convenient to plug out the USB cable every time when we restart the system with the power switch.

  • Hi, Jack:

Can you provide more details on how you capture the raw data?  Are you using radar studio?  Or are you using SDK OOB demo + DCA1000 CLI interface for raw data capture?  We never tried to capture such a long time on our side.

    Best,

    Zigang

  • Hi Zigang,

Thanks for your reply. We use mmWave Sudio + IWR6843 + DCA1000 to capture the raw data.  We use matlab code to read the raw data file that saved with the mmWave Studio.  Can you help us why the power off/on can not properly reset the IWR6843 + DCA1000?  Does this relate to the IWR6843 that is powered on the USB?  We found that we need to plug out all the USB cables when we switch the power supply off/on to reset the system.  We also want to set up a system to detect people in a place for long time, such as 24hr per day. Can you tell us how to capture the Radar raw data continuously for this application with above setup?

    Best regards,

    Jack

  • HI, Jack:

So when the system stopped capture, the reset does not work, restart radar studio does not work, Power on/off does not work?  You have to disconnect the USB cable, so which USB cable do you have to disconnect (The one on EVM or DCA1000)?

Please help to narrow down the problem.

    Best,

    Zigang

  • By the way, you can use the mmwave ICBooster, and mount the EVM on mmwaveICBooster.  The IC Booster can connect to DCA1000 as well.

And in this way, the EVM will be powered by power adaptor instead of USB cable.

    Best,

    Zigang

  • Hi ZiGang,

The USB cable of the EVM should be disconnected when we restart the system. We will try to use the mmwaveICBooster to connect the EVM to power the EVM.  Thanks for your suggestions.

    Guoping

  • Hi Jack,

This is a bug which has been replicated at TI side also. I would request you to please update the FPGA image of DCA1000EVM(the procedure is outlines in the user guide). We would be putting this image on ti.com also(as part of the mmWave studio release).

  • HI Abhed,

Thanks. We will update the FPGA image.

  • Hi Abhed,

I have update the FPGA image of DCA1000 with the file of above link. But I tried to turn off and turn on the power when all the USB cables are plug on the PC, and the DCA1000EVM can not automatically reset properly sometimes. What is the bug that the new image is for?  Please see the pic:

The LED shows that the DCA1000EVM is wrong after power on.

But the mmwaveICBooster to connect the EVM to power the EVM can work properly.

So can the new FPAG image solve the problem that the DCA1000 will stop capturing data after a few hours?

    Regards

  • Hi,

The new image is for the DCA1000 stop capturing the data after 4/5 hours of operation.

  • Hi Abhed,

With the new FPGA image update, we test the DCA1000 capturing data since yesterday. But we found that the DCA1000 still stopped capturing the data after a few hours. We will test the system for more times to confirm this problem. Thanks.

  • Hi Abhed,

I have tried again and the DCA1000 Ethernet stopped working again. I run the program at 3:00Am and check the program at 8:30Am, and the mmWave Studio and our program are running but the Ethernet stopped working. I use Wireshark to check the Ethernet and find that it stopped working.  I also cannot ping the DCA1000.

Pinging 192.168.33.180 with 32 bytes of data:
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.

    Ping statistics for 192.168.33.180:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

    Please help to check.

  • Hi,

In the above state are you able to connect to DCA1000 through mmWave studio?

    Regards

  • Hi Abhed,

In the state, the mmWave can send the commands: ar1.CaptureCardConfig_StartRecord(data_path, 1),  ar1.StartFrame() and
RSTD.Sleep(4200).   There is no error on the output window of mmwave studio.  I think that the DCA1000 was able to connected with mmWave studio. But the Ethernet was not working.  I will check and confirm this again. Thanks

  • Hi Abhed,

Today I have tried again. I started the  mmWave studio + DCA1000 with our program at 11 am and found that the Ethernet stopped at about 16:00 pm. And I checked the mmWave Studio is working fine. I can set and download both the BSS FW and MSS FW files. And I can also set the Radar parameters. But I can not reset the Ethernet.  Please check the pics:

Can you please confirm the firmware version of DCA1000 from the connection window(RFdatacapturecard window) and share the snapshot of it?

  • Hi,

The FPGA version still reads as 2.8. Please confirm if you updated the image on the DCA1000 with the 2.9version.

    Regards

  • Hi Abhed,

I have re-do the FPGA 2.9 version image update. And I restart the mmwave studio, and check the RfdatacaptureCard. The version is still showing the 2.8.

I followed the Document of image update and chose the file: DCA1000_FPGA_RECORD_V2.9_21JUL2022.bit. And the DCA1000 board program SW is correct. The update of new image is successful.

The image update is successful. Why the mmWave studio is still showing the 2.8 FPGA ?

I also tried to press the push-buttons on the DCA1000 board. And the status is the same. Can you share us the new 2.9 version FPGA image again?

    Regards

  • Hi Abhed,

Now I successfully update the image and the FPGA version is 2.9 Now.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Did you solve the long time recording problem by upgrading FPGA version to 2.9?

  • Hi Yi Huang,

After upgrade the FPGA version to 2.9, we can record the raw data for more than 12 hours.

    Regards

  • Great! Thanks for bringing up the solution. It helps a lot!
