IWR1443BOOST: How to get Radar reflectivity in ROS

Part Number: IWR1443BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843AOPEVM, IWR1843BOOST

Hi,

Currently i have IWR1443BOOST EVM module.

I checked this link "dev.ti.com/.../node (radar ros-driver) to get the Pointcloud.

I got to know my module is a bit older and i am in process to purchase few other new module.

Please clarify my few doubts-

1) Does any of these IWR1843BOOST / IWR6843AOPEVM or any radar give the reflectivity as output in ROS? From above link, it says the output pointcloud is based on intensity. Does this mean reflectivity also?

2) i want to build a 2D/3D map from the pointcloud of radar so I am considering if that pointcloud is made up of material reflectivity, then i can interpret each reflective point to identify the material such as wood, metal etc.

If any of the radar does that , i would love to order that.

Thanks.

  • Hello,

Yes you can use intensity which is measured in dB as a sort of "reflectivity" on how strong the incoming signal from that point is. You can do data collection of the approximate intensity values of all the different surfaces you have interest in, and once you are familiar with the intensity values you can introduce unknown surfaces in order to determine what surface its reflectivity is closest to.
