AWR1843AOP: angle detection capability of AWR1843AOP

Part Number: AWR1843AOP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1843BOOST, , AWR1843

What is the angle accuracy of the object detection with this device.

What will be the angular resolution we can get with this device.

Whether some antenna specifications can be shared,

Thank you

  • Hi,

The AWR1843AOP has an angular accuracy which is not as good as the AWR1843BOOST EVM with PCB antennae.

For angles < +/- 45 deg, we measured 5deg angle accuracy. For larger angles, 10+ degrees.

Angular accuracy can be improved using multi angle calibration

    thank you

    Cesar

  • From your reply i understand that angle accuracy depends on the antenna,

if so to improve angle accuracy, antenna less device like AWR1843 can be taken and

    external antenna can be connected.

As per the FMCW video given by TI in you tube, angle estimation resolution is = 2/ (no. of elements).

Since this device has 3 TX antenna and 4 RX antennas forming a virtual array of 12 antenna elements,

whether we can get the angle resolution of (2/12) =0.0179 degrees.

To get this resolution accuracy should be better than 0.0179 degree,

Whether the above two aspects can be achieved, the angle estimation accuracy and and angle estimation resolution.

    thank you

  • Hi,

In order to understand angular resolution please read the following appnote: MIMO Radar

    https://www.ti.com/lit/an/swra554a/swra554a.pdf

In order to increase angular resolution, MIMO technique is being used. The angular resolution is determined by the MIMO Rx antennae virtual array.

For example, for the AWR1843AOP EVM, the MIMO Rx antennae virtual array is provided in the VM User guide:

    Figure 2-7

    www.ti.com/.../spruix8.pdf

Based on the MIMO Rx antennae virtual array, for AWR1843AOP antennae

    • azimuth angular resolution (at boresight) is 2/4 rad (not degrees)
    • elevation angular resolution (at boresight) is 2/3 rad

    Thank you
