IWR6843: Max Range Overhead people counting

Part Number: IWR6843

Hello,

I need to detect people overhead at a distance of 25 meters, I would like to know if there is any example that would be better for this situation.

Thank you,

Ana

  • Hi,

Our team is currently observing a national holiday and will get back to you with a response tomorrow.

    Best Regards,

    Josh

  • Hi Ana,

Can you elaborate on the geometry of your setup? Are you placing the sensor 25m in the air and you need to detect people directly underneath it? Or do you want it placed overhead at a shorter height and you need to detect people at a non-boresight angle?

Pictures are always helpful too if you want to include them.

    Best,

    Nate

  • Hello,

I want to place the sensor on the ceiling (a very high ceiling, 25m) and detect people below it. It would be place indoor, and the radius that it would need to detect would be approximately 4 meters on each side. I saw that the lab overhead people counting is recommended for heights below 3 meters, than I would like to know if there is any example that would be better for this situation. Is it possible to use the lab area scanner, for example? The problem is that i only want to detect people and not other motion detection.

    Thank you,

    Ana

  • Hi Ana,

The maximum range for our devices will be determined by the following equation:

    (0.9 * Sampling Rate * speed of light)/(2*Frequency Slope) = Maximum Range.

I don't know if we have a lab that exactly matches the scenario you're describing. Either people counting or area scanner would be good places to start, but you'll have to alter the configuration file, specifically the profileCfg, significantly to get the range you're looking for.

Are you looking to track people in the 4mx4m box that's 25m underneath the sensor? Or just detect if people are in the area? If you're just looking to detect if the box is occupied, then I think radar can definitely do it. Tracking people accurately and precisely under these conditions may be harder, but still possible.

    Best,

    Nate
