TIDEP-01012: Cascade multiple TIDEP01012

Part Number: TIDEP-01012
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR2243, TDA2

Hi Team,

We received this inquiry from our customer.

I used the TIDEP01012 cascaded radar board with its capture board TIDEP01017. Currently, I would like to extend the antenna aperture by cascading 2 or more RF boards.

I went through the schematics of the RF board and confirmed that it is possible to share an external 40MHz clock signal. However, regarding the 20GHz LO signal, I can't see how to share the 20GHz signal generated by a primary chip with secondary chips on another board to create a TDM MIMO aperture. Is there a way for the RF board to get a 20GHz chirp from an external source, which can be either a signal generator or a primary AWR2243 radar chip? and is there a way to output the 20GHz signal generated from a primary chip on the RF board?

Moreover, is there a TI solution that can capture data from 2 or more TIDEP01012 RF boards?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi,

Currently we have just the 4 chip cascaded EVM which fits on TDA2 EVM. There is scope on 4 chip cascaded EVM to cascade further with more.

The 20GHz LO from master/primary device sources to rest three devices. There is no way to feed this 20 GHz in master as of now.

  • Hi Abhed,

Thank you for your response. Please see the comment of our customer below.

Thank you for the details you provided. I am confused though, because first you confirm that there is scope for the cascaded board to cascade further with more boards. Then, later on, you explain that there is no way to feed the 20GHz in the master.

So, is there a way to synchronize the 20GHz LO signal across boards? At the moment, only the AWR_3_FMCW_CLKOUT signal can be used for testing (RF connector needs to be soldered separately). Is it possible to access AWR_1_FMCW_CLKOUT to share it externally with a secondary board?
    Looking forward for further clarifications.

    Regards,

    Danilo

  • Hi,

In the existing architecture of the 4Chip cascade EVM, the20GHz LO from  CLK_OUT from AWR_1 feeds to AWR_1 and AWR_2 and SYNC_OUT feeds to AWR_3 and AWR_4.

It is not recommended to load or solder or blue wire this trace as it can impact the complete functionality of the cascade system/setup.

If you intend to cascade more than 4 devices then you would have to design your own board and will have to use the Wilkinson's splitters(just like done in the EVM, it is done for 2 devices in EVM however you can design and simulate for more devices depending upon need) for the CLK out and SYNC out traces to source those devices.
