sensor offset question

Hello,

I have a question regarding the drawing in the manual. It specifies a 4mm shift of the optical center, however I could not understand which direction is the shift, and where the optical center is. Is it a 4mm shift in both X and Y, or just Y?

How is the optical center defined? Is it the optical axis concentric with the center of the camera mount threading, or center of the body?

Is the optical center the center of the dotted square box?

May I ask what were the considerations in having an offset in the sensor, were there any benefits for that time period?

This product was designed over 20 years ago and understandably, there is no technical expertise available. I have searched for any additional information that may be available, but so far, no results except for this CCD bulletin:
