FDC1004EVM: level sensor- Help

Part Number: FDC1004EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: FDC1004

Hello,
I am developing a oil level sensor to measure the level of oil in Buchholz relay( Power transformer) .At present i am having FDC1004 level sensor and I have used FDC1004 and have made a small measurement of oil level to check how it is working( I have attached a picture of measurement for your reference). For this measurement,  the capacitance is measured between channel 1 and ground.

I have read the application notes and have few doubts, it is stated that the capacitance is measured between channel 1 and shield because of the parasitic capacitance and other disturbances. are there are any other reasons apart from that?

In our case, we need to measure oil level so, sensor has no contact with the container. can you suggest me how can we achieve to measure oil level and also can we measure capacitance between channel 1 electrode and ground electrode as we place the sensor inside.unlike in the application note of FCD1004  the sensor is attached on the outside of the tube. I have attatched the designed sensor board for your reference, do you think it works with  this design in terms of electrodes width and the distance between the electrodes?

  • Shivtej,

The active shield is driven by a low impedance driver with the same waveform as the sensor signal.
Compared to a grounded shield, using an active shield minimizes the load the shield places on the sensor, while protecting the sensor from EMI.

We don't (yet) have the tools to validate or help with a design.

We have a reference sensor design that uses a flex circuit. You can see an app note about the reference design here.

    Regards,
    John
