I am looking to design a laser diode distance measurement solution. I need to measure a variable distance ranging from 40 to 80mm. I am thinking to use a distance measurement algorithm with laser photodiode combination but i have the following doubts.

1) Since the speed of light is very fast it takes very minimal time to travel my distance of 40mm. As per my calculation it should take 1.33* 10^-10 seconds. This means my whole signal conditioning circuit including the ADC and MCU should be able to detect a time as low as 1.33* 10^-10 seconds. Is my understanding correct???

2) If yes, then please suggest me some high-speed ADCs and MCUs and if possible reference circuits which i can use for the same.
