MMWCAS-DSP-EVM: Tx maximum power and RF limitations

Part Number: MMWCAS-DSP-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR2243

Hi Experts,

Good day.

The customer is using the MMWCAS-DSP-EVM, they will use the RADAR with its multi Rx (16) for long-range ~50-70m.
1. Is the amplification needed? are there any limitations on RF amplifiers? Which can match?
2. What is the Maximum Tx Power of each Antenna and in a total of all?
3. Besides the SDK, Is there any other supplementary equipment needed?

please advise.

Keep safe.

Regards,

Josel

  • Hi,

The MMWCAS kit is provided to capture raw data and analyze it with provided matlab scripts.

This is not a programmable platform. There is no SDK available.

    Thank you

    Cesar

  • Hi Cesar,

    Good day.

Seems that you didn't answer the other questions. please help provide.
    1. Is the amplification needed? are there any limitations on RF amplifiers? Which can match?
    2. What is the Maximum Tx Power of each Antenna and in a total of all?

The customer also wants to clarify and make sure, their req's are:

    1. To be able to define the waveform
      2. to be able to extract the raw data from each sensor phase\Amp by time
      3. to make sure I can record 30 seconds in 1 shot (memory-wise)
      4. to make sure the samples in the sensors are in specific time increments (that can be configured)
and no interruption from the system causes delays
      5. control the main frequency, transmit chirps, and control their parameters
      6. Are these 2 items all I need for my detailed requirements below? Any connectors? Cables?

They want to make sure the 2 items are suitable for me.

    Regards,

    Josel

  • Hi,

    Sorry for the delay

    1. There is no amplification needed.

    2. Please see the AWR2243 datasheet for maximum power

    3. You should be able to define the wave form and capture raw data for more than 30sec

Please see the user guide provided in the mmwave studio release

    Thank you

  • Hi Cesar,

    Good day.

The customer replied (highlighted with green).

    3. Are these 2 items all I need for my detailed requirements below? Any connectors? Cables?
    >>What's included when buying MMWCAS-DSP-EVM

    • Quick-start guide
    • NVMe PCIe m.2 2280 SSD
    • 16GB microSD with adapter
    • USB A to mini B cable
    • Ethernet cable
->So, these above are enough for my needs?

    4. I am willing to use the RADAR with it's multi Rx (16) for long range ~50-70m, amplification might be needed, are there any limitations on RF amplifiers? Which can match?
    >>There is no amplification needed.
–> But 50m detection 2-way demands higher power transmission. Can I connect any amplifier?

    5. What is the Maximum Tx Power of each Antenna, and in total of all?
    >> 13 dBm, as stated in the AWR2243 datasheet
You may also check the average power consumption at power terminal
    -> Is this AWR2243 a part of the 2
Is this AWR2243 a part of the 2 boards? Or it is a 3rd item I need to buy, on top of 2 boards?
    I was advised to buy:
    1. Milimeter-Wave Cascade RF Evaluation Module Board
    2. Milimeter-Wave Cascade IMAGING RADAR DSP Evaluation Module Board

    - You mentioned this board can provide: "… This provides support for up to 12 TX and 16 RX antenna elements…" – why in this table I can see only 3Tx and 4Rx?

    6. I assume all SDK will be provided, and I saw you have also examples, hope configuring my own RADAR will be not too complicated task. Any other supplementary equipment needed?
    >> The MMWCAS kit is provided to capture raw data and analyze it with provided Matlab scripts. This is not a programmable platform. There is no SDK available
–>Can I analyze the data with my own Matlab scripts?

    For additional queries.
    >>You should be able to define the waveform and capture raw data for more than 30sec. Please see the user guide provided in the mmwave studio release
    –> ok, will check that.

    C:\ti\mmwave_studio_03_00_00_14\docs\mmwave_studio_cascade_user_guide.pdf
->Is the link: www.ti.com/.../MMWAVE-STUDIO the one you refer to?
Or open the attached file: mmwave_studio_cascade_user_guide

    Keep safe.

  • Hi,

I don't think that the capture sw available for this board will provide the flexibility that is needed in your project.

Before purchasing the board please make sure you analyze and understand the Matlab scripts provided.

Our team can not provide support for developing new matlab scripts.

    thank you

    Cesar

  • Hi Cesar,

    Good day.

    The customer responded.

First, thank you for your kind support.
Second, regarding Matlab scripts, it's not a problem, if needed we can develop of course.

However, I am still not sure what to purchase and whether the boards will meet my requirements.
I can summarize again all Q's, few are still open.

Please summarize from your side which items to buy, and where my requirements meet the capabilities of these items.

    Please advise.

    Regards,

    Josel

  • Hi,

The cascade kit is composed of the following 2 items. You will need to buy these 2 items.

    MMWCAS-DSP-EVM Evaluation board | TI.com

    MMWCAS-RF-EVM Evaluation board | TI.com

You will also need to buy a Power Supply (not included in kit)

    12V-5A Power Supply

    Thank you

    Cesar
