AWR1843BOOST: What is the difference and benefit of using VCO1 or VCO2

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1843

For AWR1843, selection of VCO 1 or VCO2 will make the sensor RF frequence to different bandwidth.

VCO1 76 to 78 GHz => 2GHz bandwidth

VCO2 77 to 81 GHz => 4GHz bandwidth

It seems the VCO2 has larger bandwidth than VCO1 has. with larger bandwidth, we can increae the resolution if using VCO2. Is my undestand correct?

But in the demos, many demos just have the default setting of VCO1. I don't understand why we do not set VCO2 as default.

Can you please expalin it?

Kind regards

  • Hi,

    It is correct, larger bandwidth increases the range resolution.

    However there is a trade off to achieve large ranges smaller bandwidth is used.

    For very close range detection (1-2m) we would use 4Ghz bandwidth with VCO2

    Thank you
