TMP451-Q1: Difference of local temperature sensor and remote temperature sensor

Part Number: TMP451-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP451

TMP451 has local temperature sensor and remote temperature sensor.

What’s the difference between them and what’s the use case of them ?

Is it possible that the deviation of temperature between local and remote sensor become large enough ?

  • Hi Imelda,

The TMP451 is defined as a remote temperature sensor. This means that the IC itself will monitor the temperature of the "local" position (i.e. where the device is placed) with a built-in local temperature sensor, but it also has capability to measure the temperature of alternate locations on a PCB via external transistors (or thermal diode). These external transistors are typically low-cost discrete NPN or PNP transistors, or substrate thermal transistors or diodes that are integral parts of microprocessors, microcontrollers, or FPGAs.

As can be expected the temperature deviation between the local and remote sensor can vary depending on the locations of both sensors on the board/application.
