TDC7200EVM: High speed LED light modulator

Part Number: TDC7200EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC7200

Hi Team,

Our customer is looking for a high speed LED light modulator. He wants to send a binary signal (LED ON / OFF) using LED or laser with MHz frequency. He also wants to send his customized binary signal through LED/Laser and would like to know the wavelength of the light source required for the TDC7200EVM evaluation module. Can he use a 600-700 nm (RED) wavelength light source?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hello Danilo,

Thanks for reaching out on the forum.  Our ultrasonic sensing experts are out for the Christmas-New Year holidays; however, I will try to support you as best I can.  Based on the details provided, I am not sure this is appropriate device for modulating an LED.  This device is designed to measure the time between an edge of a pulse on the START pin and the edge of  pulses on a STOP pin.  The START and STOP stimulus come from an external source.  If your customer was wanting to measure the time between pulses from two different laser sources, he could have photodiodes upstream of the START and STOP pins to convert the light signal in an electrical signal that the TDC7200 can read.  Looks like the max clock rate that can be used for the edge detection is 16MHz, which would translate to clock period of about 63ns.  Double that, 126ns, is the minimum time that can be detected between edges.
