I was considering building an IR based cloud detector using a TPS534 I was wondering would this chip accomplish the same goal with much less hardware. How about using a Freznel lens to limit the spectrum to 5 uM?

Johnny;
I think the TMP006 would work nicely to sense the presence of cloud cover re cold sky. A Fresnel lens should give you a fairly narrow field of view as well as some optical gain. The IR bandpass of the TMP006 and some plastic lenses/filters was discussed recently in another posting about the TMP006.
Hello Johnny,
Here's the thread referred to by Neil: http://e2e.ti.com/support/other_analog/temperature_sensors/f/243/t/117229.aspx
