IWR1443: Lens usage for mmWave level sensing applications

Part Number: IWR1443

Hello,

At my company we are evaluating the possibility of using an mmWave sensor technology (IWR1443 chip) for level sensing applications. We want to know if you have documentation or material related to lens design: when are they necessary, how to design them for your specific application, its impact in mmWave profiles ...

Thank you in advance for your help and best regards,

Julia S.

  • Hi Julia,

Our experience with lenses is limited, as each customer who needs one typically does their own design. We typically only see lenses used for Level Sensing applications which are using 1Rx and 1TX antenna. Lenses are typically needed for level sensing to either meet a specific regulatory need or to reduce the beam width to reduce the area being measured (such as in a tall silo).

We have done some basic testing with lenses from ThorLabs such as this one: https://www.thorlabs.com/thorproduct.cfm?partnumber=LAT151 and were able to reduce beam width to +/- 6 degrees depending on the diameter of the lens, but these lenses are obviously not optimal for use with our device.

    Best Regards,
    Alec
