AWR1843: Questions about mmWave Sensors

Part Number: AWR1843
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DCA1000EVM, , AWR1642, , MMWAVEICBOOST, IWR6843AOP, IWR6843ISK, IWR6843ISK-ODS

Hi Experts,

Our customer has a couple of questions concerning mmWave sensor products:

1. We are looking to get real time mmwave data and is it sufficient to get AWR1843BOOST or do we also need DCA1000EVM?

2.  We would like to confirm that the AWR1843 BOOST can give us 3D depth readings

3. Is it possible to get a sample dataset of the raw data of the product or a similar product?

4. Is AWR1843 BOOST the best available option for 3D point cloud?

5. Can we get a brief overview of the differences between AWR1642 BOOST-ODS and the AWR1843 BOOST?

I hope you can help us. Thank you.

Best regards,
Gerald

  • Hi,

First, let's discuss which EVM provides best 3D performance

In order to have best 3D peformance, the antenna must be such as the angular resolution is similar in both azimuth and elevation.

The AWR1843AOP antenna is the best in this aspect.

Now that being said, in the past we had questions from customers using our sensors and expecting a more rich detection point cloud. Sometimes customer have expectation to be able to determine the height or size based on the detection point cloud generated by the sensor. This is usually not possible because the angular resolution is not sufficient.

What is the application you intend to use the sensor for?

    thank you

    Cesar

  • Hi Cesar,

Thank you for the response. The customer is going to use it for fall detection. They are wondering if they need the MMWAVEICBOOST board and the DCA1000 with as well?

The customer saw in some fall detection papers that we have used the AOP model connected to an MMWAVEICEBOOST board.
His question: "What does DCA1000 and the MMWAVEICBOOST do for us?"
    Best regards,
    Gerald
  • Hi,

Please let me assign this thread to the Industrial Radar Team which supports fall detection use case

    thank you

    Cesar

  • Hi,

    Any updates? Thank you.

    Best regards,
    Gerald

  • Hi Gerald,

Sorry about the delayed response here. I suppose the customer may have already seen our fall detection experiment page but please direct them to view it if not. Typically, for industrial applications, we would recommend our 60GHz products (IWR6xxx) due to regulations on operating frequency bands in many regions. Also, I'd like to ask if the sensor is to be wall mounted or ceiling mounted? If the sensor is to be wall mounted then, IWR6843ISK with a slight down tilt will give better performance. If the sensor is to be ceiling mounted then customer may wish to use an EVM which provides similar azimuth/elevation FOV and angular resolution such as the IWR6843AOP or IWR6843ISK-ODS. You can find more information about the different antenna designs on each of our EVMs here.

"What does DCA1000 and the MMWAVEICBOOST do for us?"

The MMWAVEICBOOST carrier board is compatible with certain 60GHz EVMs and provides additional capabilities such as debugging in CCS via the on board XDS110 and more interfacing capabilities with other hardware.

The DCA1000EVM is required for streaming raw ADC data from AWR/IWR sensors. Note, certain EVMs will require both the MMWAVEICBOOST and DCA1000EVM in order to capture raw ADC data.

We are looking to get real time mmwave data and is it sufficient to get AWR1843BOOST or do we also need DCA1000EVM?

This depends on the data you are interested in capturing. If you are looking to stream out the raw ADC data in real time then the DCA1000 will be required. If you only need to capture the processed point cloud data then the UART interface on the radar EVM is sufficient.

    Best Regards,

    Josh
