LDC0851: mounting sensor on metal to detect another metal

I need the sensor to detect a moving metal chain when it comes in close proximity.

The sensing coil needs to be mounted on metal surface as well. Will this have any effect on the sensing capability?

    It is possible any conducting surface near the sense coil will affect the sensitivity.
    That being said, it may also be possible to account for this in the design so the final system so it will give the desired behavior.

    Is it possible to share more details on the requirements for the sensor, metal surface and chain?
