Question about Virtual Antenna & Mimo Radar in AWR1843

Hello,

I am using awr1843 and I Have question about Virtual Antenna & Mimo Radar.

Case 1 : From The documents "MIMO Radar" I found in figure 6.A : (picture below)

The antennas are like this : Tx1 and Tx3 in azimuth direction and Tx2 antenna in elevation direction and the 4 Rx antenna are all in azimuth direction. (picture below)

=> so we wil get 8 virtual antenna in azimuth direction and 4 virtual antenna in elevation direction ????

Case 2 : And if we put antenna like this : Tx1 and Tx3 in elevation direction and Tx2 antenna in azimuth direction and the 4 Rx antenna superposed in elevation direction. (picture below)

=> so we wil get 8 virtual antenna in elevation direction and 4 virtual antenna in azimuth direction ????

Can anyone confirm this information if it is true or correct it if there is an error?

Hi Ben,

Your understanding on the matter is correct. Essentially you are just rotating the azimuth and elevation planes by 90 degrees (which is equivalent to rotating the EVM's perspective).

Thank you for your reponse. So in this case (picture below) :

Tx1 and Tx3 are in the elevation direction and the Tx2 antenna is in the azimuth direction and the 4 Rx antennas are superposed in the elevation direction.

=> so we will have 8 virtual antennas in the elevation direction and 4 virtual antennas in the azimuth direction ???? => we will get better resolution in the elevation direction because we have more virtual antennas in the elevation direction.

Can you confirm that this is correct and tell me if the distance between the antennas is correct in this case.

Hi Ben,

Your resulting virtual antenna pattern will provide better elevation resolution. The distances depicted are also correct. As I mentioned, the change you have mentioned is essentially tilting the EVM which would have its azimuth and elevation planes swapped (and therefore their respective resolutions).
