TDC1011: TDC usage as Rx device only

Part Number: TDC1011
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSS4470, TDC1000

Hi,

I consider using TDC1011 to sense supersonic sound from a specific device.

Because this is not FOT applications but application to sense supersonic sound if any,

do I still need to use Tx part of the chip?

If I don't need Tx part, then I don't need CLKIN, TRIGGER and RES. Am I right?

Regards,

J.Y. Kim

  • Hello J.Y,

Thanks for posting to the sensors forum! If you are looking for a part that is just listening for ultrasonic energy my recommendation would be to look at TUSS4470. You can certainly do without the TX part of the circuit on this device.

My concern with the TDC device is that you must configure a listening window in which the device is actively listening for a signal, but since your application just requires you to listen you will have to keep configuring this repeatedly while TUSS4470 is actively listening all the time. The TUSS4470 has a bigger dynamic range, with more gain available it is able to pick up weaker signals if this is required. If you don't want the analog signal and only want an interrupt when a signal is detected the TUSS4470 has a comparator output pin that you can use to configure a threshold, this will operate similar to the TDC1011.

To answer your question on the TDC1011, I have not tried RX only without the clock, but the TRIGGER is required and the RESET is optional.

    I hope this helps!

  • Dear Isaac,

Thanks for the valuable comments. I'll check with TUSS4470 and hope this chip will do a good job for may application.

  • Hello J.Y.,

    Always glad to help out!

One quick note, I thought about the clock requirement for TDC1000 and it would be required for the listening window since the clock is needed for the state machine in the listening period.

I hope TUSS4470 is a great fit for your application please feel free to start another post regarding TUSS4470 if you have any other questions regarding that device.

    Best,

    Isaac
