IWR6843AOP: Moving from MMWAVEICBOOST to XDS110

Part Number: IWR6843AOP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWAVEICBOOST,

Hi,

Until now I’m developing the target software with an IWR6843AOP EVM plus a MMWAVEICBOOST carrier board. The use of the RS232 channel to configure the application (CLI interface) plus the additional RS232 Tx data link seems to be the way we go for the application.

For further development I’d like to use our own target hardware and want to replace the MMWAVEICBOOST carrier board with an XDS110 Debug Probe. As a first step of the replacement of the carrier board with the XDS110 I’ve connected the XDS110 debug interface with the 14pin JTAG connector of the MMWAVEICBOOST carrier board. I’ve also connected the Rx and Tx line of the XDS110 AUX function interface with the J5 connector of the MMWAVEICBOOST carrier board. The DIP switches S1.1 to S1.11 of the carrier board are set as listed in table 2.1 column “Position for 40-Pin LP/BP” of the user’s guide “60GHz mmWave Sensor EVMs”. S1.12 is set to position OFF.

The question I have is how to connect the data link that is available on pin 9 of J6 on the carrier board with the XDS110? I’ve tried to use the expansion connector on the XDS110 but I do not receive any data on the viewer software as I do when using the MMWAVEICBOOST carrier board as debugger.

Thanks for your advice

  • Hello,

We are looking into your question. Please give us a couple days to get back to you.

  • Hello,

Refer to the below EVM user guide and switch position.

    https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swru546e/swru546e.pdf

It’s figuring the right switch settings to bring the signals to right connector.

JTAG shouldn’t be connected when the VIO is not present (especially JTAG I/Os are driven from external USB supply during the reset).

For the external XDS110 JTAG should be connected after the Right SOP are asserted.

    Josh

  • Hi,

I'm not sure if I was clear with my explanation in my previous message. The idea is to run an OOB example with an external XDS110 debug probe. I don’t understand how to connect the MSS logger output to the external XDS110.

    Thanks for your answer

  • Hi,

My apologies. I understand the question now, thank you for clarifying.

Please see XDS110 Debug Probe User Guide for appropriate pin on the expansion header. Table-2 seems to indicate pin 17. Is this the pin you are using? I think you may also need gnd connections. Please confirm the appropriate GND pins by checking the schematic.

  • Hi,

I still can't make the MSS LOGGER data link with the external XDS110 debug probe work. I've tried to connect the MMS LOGGER signal (marked with a blue circle on the previous photos) to several inputs of the XDS but no luck. The 1st RS232 channel for the CLI of the OOB runs fine on the external XDS110. Using the XDS on the MMWAVEICBOOST carrier board both serial (CLI and MSS LOGGER) channels are ok. As I do not have a schematic of the MMWAVEICBOOST board I don't know which pin of the on-board XDS chip the MSS LOGGER signal is connected with. Do you know if the on-board XDS chip and the external XDS110 probe use the same chip?

    Thanks

    Achim

  • Hi Achim,

The MMWAVEICBOOST schematic can be found here under 'Design Files'. I want to take a step back and ask how you are verifying if the UART is working or not.

The 1st RS232 channel for the CLI of the OOB runs fine on the external XDS110.

Are you flashing demo code to the device or are you sending a .cfg file to the device and starting the radar? Please let me know.

I'm also thinking that your setting for S1.11 is incorrect. With S1.11 OFF then SOP pins are routed to the 40PIN connector but it seems you are not using these pins on J6. Please confirm.

    Best Regards,

    Josh

  • Hi Josh,

Thanks for the schematic. In case the XDS110 on mmwciboost is used the MSS LOGGER signal is routed to pin 25 "U7RX" of the XDS chip.

On the expansion connector of the external XDS110 debug probe pin 17 "GPIO (PC4), UART7 RX" is available. I have tried to use this pin but the logger data does not get through to the signal viewer as it does with the XDS on the MMWAVECIBOOSTER carrier board. I've confirmed with an oscilloscope that logger data is present on the wire that runs from pin 9 of J6 (MMWASVECIBOOST board) to pin 17 of the XDS110 expansion probe.

Concerning your question I confirm that I'm sending the CLI to the radar chip via RX an TX signal connected to the AUX connecot of the external XDS110. The CLI communication works fine:

The console shows that the sensor was started ok.

Please let me know what I could try.

    Thanks

    Achim

  • Hi Achim,

Sorry for the delay here. I'm looking into this. Please allow me another 24 hrs to respond.

    Josh

  • Hi Achim,

My sincere apologies for the excessive delay, this thread appears to have been mismanaged. Are you still looking for guidance here or is the issue resolved?
