TUSS4440: Equation for Ct/Rt

Part Number: TUSS4440
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA460

Dear team,

The customer want to know intended use of Ct/Rt and equation to decide value for Ct/Rt.

The datasheet said, Ct and Rt are Optional. Value depends on transducer and transformer used.

Please let me know your opinion regarding the role of Ct/Rt and equation for Ct/Rt.

Thank you.

  • Hello Dino,

Thanks for posting to the sensors forum!

We have a document that goes over this topic, it is specifically for the PGA460 but this information is still applicable for the TUSS44x0 devices. Please have them review section 4.4.2 and section 4.4.3 of this document here: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slaa732a/slaa732a.pdf

Just as a quick summary both components are not required but have a different purpose, C_T or the tuning capacitor is used to tune the secondary inductance of the transformer to optimize the resonant frequency of the transducer, this helps ensure that the transducer is driven at its ideal frequency maximizing sound pressure created by the transducer. While R_T is a damping resistor used to reduce the blind zone by reducing the ringing-decay time, which allows you to make shorter range measurements.

I hope this helps and let me know if there are any questions!

    Best,

    Isaac
